These recommendations are for companies I respect and do business with. Best choice for inexpensive shared hosting: Interserver
I have been working with Interserver for years. They offer several hosting options, covering shared hosting (they manage the server software), VPS hosting (you manage all the software—but they do offer licenses and preinstalled options for common setups), and dedicated servers (you rent a physical machine in their datacenter). In both cases, they have some of the most inexpensive plans in the industry.
Low prices isn’t the only reason I like this company, though. I considered them first because they are a relatively small, locally owned and operated business. Headquartered in New Jersey, they have been in business since 1999. They have gotten very good at what they do, and they have resisted the temptation to sell out to any of the bigger hosting providers. While they do frequently offer sales, they don’t rely on teaser rates (where the price goes through the roof after the first year) or upselling where you end up paying a ton of different charges for things that should have been included. Additionally, they have made a commitment to protecting the environment by using renewable energy to power their datacenters and keeping their overall carbon footprint low.
Best choice for high-end virtual hosting in Michigan: MojoHost
I like this company for two reasons: first, they have really solid products. Second, they are local to Michigan, where I and many of our clients work.
Like Interserver, MojoHost is a locally owned and operated small business since 1999. Headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, they offer high-performance services right on our doorstep. Their products are not the cheapest, but their personalized service and commitment to their customers makes any additional cost worth while.
MojoHost specializes in cloud services and dedicated hardware in VPS packaging. These products are not as useful for simple small websites, but for local folks who need powerful servers to host apps or data for their business, this can be a great choice.
